How I got a $150 Amazon Tablet for only $52

Yes, I was able to get a new (not refurbished) Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet for a third of the price using smart money tactics. Here’s how I ended up paying only $52.35 out of pocket for a tablet that normally costs $150 plus taxes.

The tablet comes with a 10.1 inch display with 1080 pixels that’s full HD. It also comes with 32 GB of storage and Alexa hands free which means Alexa is ready and waiting for any command or question, just say the word. At regular price, this tablet starts at $149.99 plus tax. If you want a tablet without the ads it’ll cost $15 extra and $40 more for more GB’s.

The tablet was on sale for $99.99 with two options to choose from, the add to cart (pay now) option and the pay later (monthly installments) option. I’d never seen this option before on Amazon. This is not to be confused with the Amazon credit card offer. I chose the 5 monthly installments because I had a plan. I wanted to have this tablet “paid in full” asap.

Creative yet Simple

I had an older Amazon 7 inch tablet but I wanted a bigger display for blogging. I ordered the tablet on Dec 28th and didn’t have to pay the first installment until after it arrived in January 2019. It felt a little weird to me because it wasn’t paid for. So my plan was to pay off the balance fast. It arrived within 5 days, and the first installment was due. Here are the details below.

  1. First & Second Payment: I paid the first and second payments using my personal account. The shipping was free so my card was charged $20 plus tax ($27.50) on Jan 2nd. The second amount of $20 was taken out on Jan 30th. I paid that one a bit early.
  2. Third Payment: I have a rebates account that I used during the holidays. I used the money I got from Ebates (now Rakuten) for the next installment. The check was $16.83, so I used most of that free money minus ten percent for the next payment. $20 paid on Feb 22nd.
  3. Fourth and Fifth Payment: In March, I signed up to test drive cars from different dealerships in my spare time. I got a total of $175 just for driving new cars! From the screenshots below, you can see that the final payments were due on April 2nd and May 2nd. I paid the balance of $39.99 on March 11th using one of my virtual Visa gift cards and still had money left over.

Finally, it was paid in full! Don’t you just love those words. Yes, I could’ve just paid for the tablet when I ordered it and yes, I could’ve waited until March to buy the Fire HD tablet with the money I got from test driving. By then, the sale was over and the installment option had been removed. Plus, a “I bought a tablet” post wouldn’t have been as interesting or as fun to write as this blog post has been ☺.

To recap, I used $52.35 of my hard earned money plus $55.14 of my free easy earned money to purchase my tablet. A sale price total of $107.49. The regular price with tax would’ve been $161.24, so I saved $108.89 or 68%. That’s a good deal!

Using creative ways to pay for my tablet was a fun experiment. I hope this has inspired you to use these or other methods.
